For those who choose to do the work---the first thing that we are going to do is to teach ourselves about the word etymology. In order to do this in a correct manner, there are some minor things that must be accomplished. 1st  thing for us to do---get over knowing without knowing---whatever you have been taught in school is not what we are doing-get over believing what your saviors have told you, because, it is not what we are doing. The process that you will learn is an aspect of learning how to learn and you are going to learn how to teach yourself.  YOU are going to learn how to fish for yourself so that you will not have to trust another to know for YOU.  This is the only way that you will come to have the power to feed yourself. 

 

Please go to your dictionary and look up the word etymology.  Please make yourself familiar with this word.  Start by reading the definition.  From here, go to the dictionary guide or how to use the dictionary and read what it tells you about the science that is known as “Etymology”.  As we precede, we will at a later time enter into dialog about definitions and meanings, this will be important but we will have to wait. Look up the words etymon and also logy. 

Please post comments about what you find and this will allow us to move forward.

Etymology – the science of tracing and analyzing the historical development of a linguistic form, a word, a sentence or morpheme (some words contain combinations of other words).  The act(s) of tracing a word, sentence or morpheme back until it contains no smaller meaningful forms or parts and tracing it to its original source of a language.

 

Example of a morpheme:  Etymology is a morpheme because it is the combination of the words etymon and logy. Another word I learned in my research is collocation that means: the act of placing or putting together, i.e., a noticeable arrangement or conjoining of linguistic elements, as words.

 

Etymon: [1576, n. pl –ma, also -mons] 1. An earlier form of a word in the same language or an ancestral

     language. A word or morpheme from which words are formed by

     composition or derivation.

 

Logy: [1847, OF, fr. L –logia word] 1: A science of oral or written doctrine,

     theory, or oral or written expression

    

First, In order to use the dictionary effectively, I must learn what time frames or certain periods mean when we talk about Old English, Middle English, Old High German, and so on. Below are some of the languages spoken during certain periods that will show up in the dictionary as to when a word or language form was put into use.

 

Old English: 7th to 11th Century

Middle English: 12th to 15th Century

Old High German: 11th to 15th Century

Old Middle German: ?

Middle Low German: 11th to 15th Century

Old French: 9th to 13th century

Middle French: 14th to 16th Century

Middle Greek: 7th to 15th Century

Mean – Before 12c, ME akin to OHG   a. Lacking dignity, to have in mind as a purpose. b. to design for or destine to a specified purpose or future. In math: occupying a middle position; intermediate in space;  arithemetic means. Mean has at least three context by the definition can change; know the context which within one is addressing .

Etymology is taught at some high schools in Memphis.  I am not sure to what extent and at what schools.  I feel it should be taught from the gate.  Often by middle and high school, particularly in public high schools, it may be too late to change the kids and the environments bad habits.  The public school environment is so social.  I have been taking a "No-Nonsense Nuturing Training" offered by MCS and it works well if the students are younger.  Our older students in Memphis have problems with focus.  Just an observation! 

When I first looked up the word etymology, I saw the word philology and I thought it was misspelled. Looked philology up and saw another world unfold. I never REALIZED language could be studied in such a manner. 

It gets greater later! You are learning how to open the first gate or door (portal) onto a path that has the potential to change your life in ways that are beyound the ablility of/for words to explain. As you learn to do more you will be able to see more and you will wonder why are people resisting and choosing not to empower themselves, in other words, why are so many afraid to try for a better existence, if not for themselves then for their children.  Once you can see the questions they will add up and multiply at exponential rates that are phenomenal.

Learning of Etymology, changed my life.  Even though I was a Jesus believing, god fearing, heaven bound christian....or so I thought, but I always had questions.  It wasn't until I heard someone speak of this strange word I've never heard of before, etymology.  It confirmed what I had questioned and has since provided me with a new outlook on life.  I look forward to learning more and more and assisting my children truly learn to think.

That rabbit hole opens up to more and more holes!  Someone said, the moment you start chosing sides you end up right back down the rabbit hole, so stop choosing sides and just BE!

I read the definition of the word holy.  I don't know how to go "back". Here's my try.  Be mindful that this is my first ever attempt at this.

ME: holi; OE: holig/haleg/hal; heilig

I'm getting nowhere.  Forgive me.  Heck, I just bought my first dictionary today!!
