While doing some work, I found that in the latin language to be literate means to know the letters. Interesting enough the "English" Alphabet derived from the Latin Alphabet.
literate (adj.) "educated, instructed," early 15c., from L. literatus/litteratus "educated, learned," lit. "one who knows the letters," formed in imitation of Gk. grammatikos from L. littera/litera "letter" (see letter (n.1)).
