DIALOGUE AND DISCUSSION ON EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT AND RACE

WRONG:

CAUCASIAN

“Caucasian” is an outdated term originally used to refer to some or all of the people of Europe, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and Central and South Asia. It was invented in the early 19th century by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, who felt the Caucasian “race” was best exemplified by people from people living in the Caucasus mountains of Georgia. It is widely misused today as a synonym for “white.” Although the concept of “race” is still widely popular, contemporary scientists have generally rejected the concept as simplistic and misleading.

The term is better avoided except in reference to people actually from the Caucasus.

William Sanders Scarborough (1852 – 1926) was head of the Classical Department of Wilberforce University of Ohio, and Vice-President of the same institution. He was a great writer in defense of the Afro-American race'. Prof. W. S. Scarborough was the first Black scholar to openly challenge Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of industrial education, arguing in essays and other media that African Americans were as capable as white people of high achievement in the liberal arts. Scarborough was the first African American member of the Modern Language Association, and only the third Black member of the American Philological Association. He was also the author of a widely used and influential textbook, First Lessons in Greek. First published in 1881, this this introductory classics text was adopted by a number of institutions, including Yale University. The profile below was published in the nation’s most widely circulated Black periodical of the period, The Christian Recorder.

Here are some of his remarks in his masterpiece, "Race Integrity": "The truth is that the term ‘Caucasian’ has little or no meaning as it is now used. The word itself is a conventional term given at the first by Blumenbach to designate what he considered the highest type of the human family, shown by a skull from Mount Caucasus. When we attempt to trace those who would claim the name as an expression of their superiority we find the type has disappeared. There is no pure specimen now in existence. And if we ask what is ‘white’ we can only say, ‘that it is a term used to designate the absence of color’—that is all, and no sign whatever of ‘race integrity.’ We have already indicated that science and investigation point to the fact that primitive man was not white. It is no new theory, but it has seemed convenient for the Saxon to let it rest as much as possible in discrete oblivion.

Namaska Brandon-It is a long and arduous journey, but, if you manage to keep putting one foot in front of the other you are going to get there.

As I read this, I thought what could cause people who have been shown information such as this, to continue and not change?  My thoughts took me to the idea of christmas, when as a child I first had an idea that santa was just a hoax.  When another child told me it was not true or even when I did not get what I wanted from old saint nick.  Not only did I continue to pretend, I even lied to my children.  What harm could it do?  I turned out alright didn't I?  As a child, I can only think maybe I was afraid of what would happen if I no longer believed.  The only thing I can relate this too is the thought of powerlessness.  Why powerlessness?  Well, as long as my parents knew I believed in santa, they would continue to pretend to be santa and buy me the things I wanted.  How else would I get these gifts?  If I had to depend on myself to get these gifts, it could take a very long time or never happen.  Maybe a stretch or not the best comparison but a thought that came to me.

Is it possible that even those who proudly identify themselves as white are feeling a sense of powerlessness or an insecurity about themselves?  Is it possible that masses of people hide behind lables because they are afraid to look at themselves?  For me I think it is very easy to hide among the crowd, let the group speak for me or speak as a group, make excuses and in some cases justify actions of a group.  However, if I were to remove all the lables and get down to just me, is it possible that I may be afraid of what I now must face?  It could be compared to a situation when you are in a room holding a conversation, the noise in the room is very loud and as you raise your voice and share something personal with the person you are speaking with, all of a sudden the noise quiets and your voice and your words are exposed to everyone in the room and all eyes are now on you.  What do you do now?

The next degree gets a little harder, in the mean time, "sho u right".

As I read through one of the dictionaries in my possession, I noticed the word Circassian.  As I read, I learned that Circassian was the language of a group of people in the Northern Caucasus region.

Wikipedia:

The name Circassia is a Latinisation of Cherkess, the Turkic name for the Adyghe people, and originated in the 15th century with medieval Genoese merchants and travellers to Circassia.[3][4] The name Cherkess is traditionally applied to the Adyghe by neighbouring Turkic peoples (principally Crimean Tatars[5] and Ottoman Turks[6]).

Another historical name for the country was Zyx or the Zygii. The Zygii have been described by the ancient Greek intellectual Strabo as a nation to the north of Colchis but sources are contradictory and the name probably referred to western Chechen tribes.

At the end of the 15th century a detailed description of Circassia and of its inhabitants was made by Genoese traveler and ethnographer Giorgio Interiano.[7]

I would further learn of the term "Circassian Beauties," which references the women of the Circassian people.  In 1734, Voltaire alluded to the beauty of Circassian women in his "Letters on the English." The notion of the beauty of the Circassian beauties lead to advertising beauty products said to be used by Circassian women.

Wikipedia:

By the early nineteenth century, Circassians were associated with theories of racial hierarchy, which elevated the Caucasus region as the source of the purest examples of the "white race", which was named the Caucasian race after the area by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach. Blumenbach theorised that the Circassians were the closest to God's original model of humanity, and thus "the purest and most beautiful whites were the Circassians".[10] This fuelled the idea of female Circassian beauty.[11]

The combination of the popular issues of slavery, the Orient, racial ideology, and sexual titillation gave the reports of Circassian women sufficient notoriety at the time that the circus leader P. T. Barnum decided to capitalize on this interest. He displayed a "Circassian Beauty" at his American Museum in 1865. Barnum's Circassian beauties were young women with tall, teased hairstyles, rather like the Afro style of the 1970s.[14] Actual Circassian hairstyles bore no resemblance to Barnum's fantasy.[15] Barnum's first "Circassian" was marketed under the name "Zalumma Agra" and was exhibited at his American Museum in New York from 1864. Barnum had written to John Greenwood, his agent in Europe, asking him to purchase a beautiful Circassian girl to exhibit, or at least to hire a girl who could "pass for" one.

Keep working and it will only get better.  As you gain more data, you gain a greater insight.  Nonsense will become easier to SEE.

Some sources state that three million Circassians were evicted from Circassia in a period lasting until 1911.[35] Other sources cite upwards of two million Circassian refugees fleeing Circassia by 1914 and entering nations and regions such as the BalkansTurkey, what was the Ottoman Empire in what was known as the MuhajirIran, the Qajar dynastyalso as MuhajirSyriaLebanon, what is now JordanKosovoEgypt (Circassians had been part of the Mamluk armies since the Middle Ages), Israel (in the villages of Kfar Kamaand Rikhaniya, since 1880) and as far afield as upstate New York and New Jersey.

The real truth is information or in this case knowledge, is hidden in plain sight! Like the dying witch says, " What a world!"
