Since this is the last day of the month that is used to review what has been going on in the past, I feel compelled to make sure that these brave MEN and WOMEN are not forgotten about and placed on the back burner.

Dr. Black, this link no longer works.

We will attempt to do this one more time!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deacons_for_Defense_and_Justice

Very interesting article written by Sonia James-Wilson.  This article introduced me to information I have never encountered before.

A few excerpts of the article brought about questions and thoughts:

"Some view the period from the mid 1950s to the mid 1970s as two distinct eras in U.S. history."

I too viewed the civil rights movement and the "black power" movement separately.  Wondering if this was by design.

"For example, for the leaders of the Black Power movement, self-determination was recognized as the highest aspiration of African Americans, whereas many civil rights leaders believed this goal alienated sympathizers."

This article indicates more than one leader in these movements, without indicating who the leaders were.  I always believed that Martin was the lone leader of civil rights and somehow I was led to believe that Malcolm was the leader against non-violence.  Which ended the movements with the loss of these two individuals, who I thought were the leaders of each movement.

I read in the article about self defense versus non violence and there appears to be some confusion.  Defense and defend are actions to repel an attack. Violence led back to a desire to hunt.  If I am the hunted and I wish to survive or maintain my existence its either by fight or flight.  If I am non violent, I am not hunting, I am not on the offensive attack.  The language or words being used without examination can cause confusion.

I look forward to learning more about Robert F. Williams, Audrey Hudson, Bobby Seals, and organizations such as Lowndes County Freedom Organization.  Some of the efforts made by the Deacons for Defense and the Black Panther Party could and would be utilized today to not only protect those in the "hood" from outside oppressive and abusive forces but also from predators who also live inside the areas as well.  From the very limited information I currently have about these parties I can understand why they had to be destroyed.

Excerpts "Negroes with Guns"

"In 1959, after three white men were acquitted of assaulting black women in Monroe, Williams publicly
proclaimed the right of African Americans to armed self-defense.

The very next morning I received a long distance telephone call from the national office wanting
to know if I had been quoted correctly. I told them that I had. They said the NAACP was not an
organization of violence."

Example of the trickery of the words.  Williams statements were in regards to defensive actions, yet it was looked at as if he were on the attack.

The insights that you are viewing, are thoughts that must be shared, and, this is why the class is so important. It will take the joint efforts of ALL of US to cause the change that we must provoke.
