Wow, Mr. Black it just dawned on me how foundational this book would be to any discussion on race. Of course its follow up book by Orwell is an excellent choice also.

I agree with you Mr. Lewis! This book thoroughly influenced my life. Dr. Black introduced this book to me when I was a preschooler. I've read the book a few times, and everytime it has a new impact on my mentality and how I view life and its windows that are often overlooked. The concept of this book is simple yet very compex. I feel as if one often overlooks their capabilities due to those restraining, artificial distractions that our society has to offer. All it takes is focus. If we would spend more time focusing on our mental strength, there would be much more success and less doubt. As a matter of fact, this book would solely be a testimony that we could share with Jonathan in our own personal fashion. We are capable of much more than we are doing at this very moment; we must advance!

Johnathan Seagull ! What a mystery in disguise! I really did not understand the true meaning of this story until I sat on the beach facing Lake Michigan and a group of seagulls were in my view. I had some of Chicago's famous cheese popcorn and decided to share some with "a" seagull. The sea gull ate and flew away only to bring two more seagulls back. The next thing I witnessed was a large group gathering to eat popcorn. Now that is love! Wonder how the world would be if we as people shared knowledge, information, and love like the seagulls did?

B. what about that one Seagull who refuses to eat from the hands of humans and decides to fly way up so he can see into the depths of the waters and dive deeper for the fish? One aim just another perspective.

i haven't read through all of this thread...but I felt compelled to add my perspective.... which is that of flexibility and versatility: if i were a seagull...i would not only eat from the hands of humans, i would also learn to fly way up to see into the depths of the waters and be able to dive deeper for fish

Namaska Endeavorous one, just returned from a trip to the gulf and the first thing I see is U. So, I am happy that I see you and maybe this is indicative to what time this IS. There is so much that is available on the site and i am hoping that it will catch on with those who are seeking the power that will be needed in the coming time.

Here's the truth! When I feed the seagull he did not eat it from my hands. I tossed the popcorn onto the sand. I think that's the one bird who flew higher and dove deeper to evidentually make the decision to come back and to bring others with him.

Here i go.... Finally! I had a sec before i got off of work to drop a few lines. that was one of the most prolific short story i have read in a long time. I could just see Damon Wayans in the corner screaming......"MESSAGE!" There are those who can read it and still cant get past the words. when i get home i am going to join this discussion... DR. Black....

One question that comes to mind upon my reflections of the book is, when does a little bit knowledge becomes dangerous to the learned. Johnathan's desire to impress the elder seagull with his new found abilities and his longing to present himself as part of, (hey, I'm just like you) reminded me of my own short comming in regard to running my mouth before I've seen the whole picture. I learned from that portion of the book that open mindedness is an essential of learning. Thanks Doc for being a light for the blind like me.
