Follow up thought.. as to the inadequate way we are "taught."
Across three privileged schools that I mostly was blessed not to have to pay for, we encountered Plato at all three levels.
I do not recall ANY significant discussion or exercise that contextualized Plato and Socrates better than a quick "fun-fact," only a bit of introduction to the specific dialogue.

Thank you for the reminder to keep Plato in the library. I have read the Republic twice; I wonder just what I would take from it now - 15 years of experience later!
The texts on the end / mortality referenced in that wiki-link are one's I never encountered before. Into the library they go!
