DIALOGUE AND DISCUSSION ON EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT AND RACE
Hello everyone. I, or shall I say my husband and I, have a GREAT decision to make. My son is 12 years old, and he no longer wants to go to traditional school. He hasn't enjoyed public school for a couple of years now. He's in the 7th grade, and could quite possibly test for a higher grade. Today, he asked if he could stay at home from school. I have often told my children that I don't mind them taking mental days from school. He stayed at home yesterday. Because the school year just started, I really don't want them to miss too many days right now. I'm really not sure if he wants to stop going to school altogether. Anyway, my husband and I have been contemplating home schooling for 3 years, gathering information, talking back in forth about how we could do it. My schedule allows me to be home up until 1:30 in the afternoons. My husband is home after 5. I am so afraid to take on this responsibility, although I know the school system is failing our kids anyway. I need some suggestions. Has anyone successfully done this? I think my fear would be less if my children were younger when we started home schooling. I surely don't want to fail them. I've been told that their are online classes and even classes to attend on campus. So it doesn't sound impossible. I guess it's one of those things...the fear of the unknown...

We started our son when he was in ninth grade. When he graduated he had maintained a 3.99 GPA got a scholarship to Christian Brothers University, double major in engineering and math maintaining a 3.8. We started him with Dr. Black when he was 12 so he knew how to school himself by the time he was 14. Reread what you wrote, "the public school system is failing our children", to know that and continue to send your child to a system whose intent is mediocrity at best is on you.
When the time comes for an Eagle to fly you must be ready to let go!! If the young bird is not pushed forward so as to experience responsibility for itself then in the end they will be down here on the ground watching sparrows fly!

Everything subject taught at school can be taught at home. As a matter of fact more can be taught at home because our schools have so much going on socially. In my judgment, inclusion has not helped becuase so many students disrupt and take away from/interfere with the instruction. Do the math (and I teach public high school). I am supposewd to teach six classes 180 days for 55 minutes. I have a curriculum I follow. In a 55 minute class for 180 days, with effective teaching a student may learn. But with 35 students and many not focused/listening/awake so much time is wasted. Let's say I teach and the student focuses 30 minutes because of the efforts of both teachers and students to get/keep them focused becuse mind you all aren't their to learn. The students may use 20 or 30 minutes to do/practice/go over materials. If that is the case/average (on a good day) students who focus actually get, approximately, 90 days of school each year per subject. If he/she is disciplined and focus for 12 years (and I doubt it) then a student may have a 6th grade student's worth of material/education by 12th grade. This is just a mythological scenario I use to show students how much time we/they waste doing things to take away from their intention/purpose, which is to educate/get educated.
If you home school you can get the material to the student with effective time management. Critical subjects like mathematics, language arts and science require the use of "all the time" because there is so much to learn. And, if student knows how to learn the time management piece is a no brainer. Learn how to learn, get a clear curriculum and manage the time effectively! You can do it. So much time is wasted in public schools. Just a fact!!!
@Craig-
If this that u are saying is understood, then maybe a lot of wasted time could be saved by not sending children into madness utilizing 'hope', as the key element of a stategy, to educate your children.

This and more is what your children look forward to each and every day that they are forced to attend public schools.

I am now following this discussion, so when the time comes that I am a father I will be prepared. I am thankful for being a student with Dr.Black learning to learn, I know this will help me when that time comes. And more important the day may never come to past, I will be in position to help others learn to learn.
