I watched this movie clip about 3 times, I see the "attention span" issue is not new.  Ms. Thomas may of heard this being told to others or even heard it being directed to her during her schooling.  Barbara was showing how she views the world and quickly pointed out just because she didn't want to conform to play along in the work force game doesn't mean that she is not capable of thinking or paying attention.  She's been paying enough attention to see the  obstacles that stand in the way.

Al---A number of people had this problem figured out BACK THEN, because a few GOOD PERSONS had been thinking about the REAL problems for a long period of time. The new negro that has come into the overseer position only listens to their creators and so nothing ever gets done....

@ Brandon-it may be wise to watch the whole movie, you may hear and see something{s} being addressed 30yrs ago that is/are still going on at the present time.

Barbara sure told her. That's why its best to have your house in order before you go sweeping at others door. This also shows the division of the so called middle class and so called lower class.
