One of my favorite movies Gladiator, the following exchange of dialogue makes me wonder if masses of people have just yielded...

QUINTUS: These barbarians would rather drown in blood than yield an inch. If I didn't hate them so much I would admire them.

TITUS: They simply will not surrender.

MAXIMUS: At the first signal release the catapults. We'll use the cavalry to cut off the retreat.

QUINTUS: People should know when they're conquered.

MAXIMUS: Would you Quintus? Would I?

If I wanted to ensure the continuation of my control over masses of people it would be reckless of me to teach them what I know and suicidal to teach them how I came to learn how to know what I know.

It is yet another variation of the conversation that Neo had with the Architect , it is a condensed version of the soliloquy delivered by Ned Beatty in the movie Network. The question that still begs to be asked is what's so good about civilization?
