B-boying or breaking also known as breakdancing is said to have originated in New York during the 1970s. Surprisingly, the breakdancing art form is very similar to self-defense movements possibly developed in Brazil between the 16th and 19th centuries by kidnapped people who were enslaved and forced to work on large Portuguese sugar cane farms called Engenhos.
