Circa 1948, the Afrikaner National Party was the political party in control of South Africa.  This party was formed following the establishment of the Union of South Africa.  Afrikaans were Dutch protestant settlers to the area during the17th century.  The Union of South Africa was formed at the end of the Second Boer war.  Boers or Trekboers were settlers of Dutch origins consisting of Dutch colonists, Calvinists, French Huguenots and German protestants who fought in wars collectively known as Anglo-Boer wars.
