Why Race? Why Now? ( Posted July 10, 2009)
Why race and why now? Based on the date of the original post, I think race was a hot subject due to the election of the 44th president of the United States of America. The person elected has the appearance of what most identify to be a black man. Growing up, I recall hearing a so called black man would never be elected as president of the U.S. and up until January 20, 2099 only those who had the appearance of what most identify to be white men had held that position.

Is the race issue over?
The issue of race is not over simply due to one individual being elected in office. The issue of race will continue on until it is known or discussed what race actually is.

Have African Americans finally arrived?
Many who identify themselves as African Americans particularly people in America who also identify themselves as descendents of slavery may feel African Americans have finally arrived with the election of President Barrack Obama.

Tell me how did you get to be white or black or yellow or red?
Someone told me or I overheard someone say when I was a young child that I was black and/or people that look like me are black people. I never understood it, because I could tell a difference between the color black and the color of my skin.

How long have you been white or black?
I was born in the early 1970s and since that time I have been made aware that I was a negro, colored, black, afro american and now african american. No one ever explained why the different identifications.

Where did the concept of race by color come from? Who started it? In fact what is race?
Unless I am mistaken, the concept of race by color came from the theory of one individual in the late 1700s.

What is culture?
Prior to KNOWing what culture is, I believed culture to be associated with customs of each of the identified races. Now I know, culture is not associated with said customs of the misnomered races of people.

Who defined it for you?
I can not name one particular person who defined culture for me, I was told that’s what it meant and I have no one to blame but me for accepting it to be the truth.

What is your heritage and who defined it for you?
I can say the same for “MY” heritage; I associated it with the history of “MY/OUR” people.

Where did you learn about these things?
I heard of these things in school, in the neighborhood at family functions etc. The belief of the meanings of these words were enforced and engrained as truth for as long as I can recall.

How do you know any of it is true?
I accepted it as truth; I never questioned it or was informed how I could determine if it were in fact the truth. I don’t recall anyone questioning any of it and don’t recall it being encouraged to even question. As I became older I soon realized those who questioned were called names such as sell out.

What if this race issue was just something made up? What difference would it make?
I now know what is true and what is made up and/or assumed. To me I think it makes a world of difference to not just accept anything with out further inspection. I think it gives power to anyone who makes a decision to look further into any belief, idea, concept, description and/or identification. Why? What if it’s something derogatory. Why give that power or ability to someone else especially if that person or persons does not have a people’s best interest in mind.

So much more to learn and know the question I have is with verifiable information available why do some still choose to continue to ignore or remain ignor-ant? Are some afraid that knowing would cause some sort of action? As Uncle Ben stated to Peter Paker aka Spiderman; “With great power, comes great responsibility.”
