Make sure that you have taught yourself how to understand the history of the country where you were born.

This is the start of a new thread that will pull together abstract data in an effort to aid "getting the picture".

The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations became the first of England's Thirteen Colonies to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown.

Information/Data can lead to knowledge!

I can understand how/why this colony became the first to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown since its founders agreed upon an egalitarian constitution.  Egalitarian:   from French égalitaire, from Old French egalite, from Latin aequalitatem meaning equal.

The Royal Charter of 1663 was a colonial charter giving English royal recognition to the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, providing a foundation for the government, and outlining broad freedoms for the inhabitants of that colony. Having been the guiding document for the government of Rhode Island over a period of 180 years, it was the oldest constitutional charter in the world at the time of its retirement in 1843.

What became the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations began as a few scattered settlements of fugitives fleeing from the persecution of other colonies.[2] The scattered cabins along the river or bay became small villages, and eventually the villages grew into towns, each with its own government and laws.[3] Greatly threatened by their ambitious and vindictive external neighbors, the towns banded together under the Patent of 1643/4, recognizing their corporate existence, and compelling recognition from their neighbors as well.[4] The freedoms granted by the patent were, in the early days, a source of weakness, and in essence legalized a collection of independent corporations rather than creating a sovereign power resting upon the popular will.[2] The patent produced a confederacy, but not a union.[2]

Providence Plantation was an American colony of English settlers founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a theologian, independent preacher, and linguist on land gifted by the Narragansett sachem, Canonicus. Williams, exiled from religious persecution in the Massachusetts Bay Colony,[1] agreed with his fellow settlers on an egalitarian constitution providing for majority rule "in civil things" and liberty of conscience. He named the colony Providence Plantation, believing that God had brought him and his followers there. "Plantation" was used in the 17th century as a synonym for "settlement" or "colony."[2] Williams named the other islands in the Narragansett Bay after virtues: Patience Island, Prudence Island and Hope Island.[3]

The Staten Island Peace Conference was a brief meeting held in the hope of bringing an end to the American Revolutionary War. The conference took place on September 11, 1776, at Billop Manor, the residence of Colonel Christopher Billop, on Staten Island, New York. The participants were the British Admiral Lord Richard Howe, and members of the Second Continental Congress John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Edward Rutledge.

This makes me really think about July 4, 1776 and what it symbolizes.

Why is there such meager amounts of data being instructed into students in this country.

When researching this link, make sure that you understand the part about what is being called african american!

Is it not strange that most have no clue as to when the war for Independence starts or ends-----why not?
