"To preserve a mind free from the wanton tyranny that rules his outward life", man (he/she) must first re-cognize that tyranny as such, and begin to understand its depth and breadth.  Due to the programming to which we were subject even before birth "to preserve a mind" is, in my judgment, unrealistic.  "Re-claim" makes more sense to me.
