DIALOGUE AND DISCUSSION ON EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT AND RACE

Illusion of Control and Freedom

A clip from the movie "Instinct." The discussion between Ethan (Anthony Hopkins) and Theo (Cuba Gooding Jr.) points to the illusion that we believe we have genuine control and genuine freedom. Great clip.

Ali & Adisa, I do want to take a stab at addressing this contradiction of illusion and reality, but, not on the internet.  I hope that we can plan for a meeting of minds maybe in Tunica or the Islands at a seminar or maybe just in class and so that means that U both should save this thought as a question to be asked when we come together.

Lumumba, I can only give you my perspective in regards to the video clip and in regards to your question about illusions vs reality.  I posted a blog on my page regarding this clip, that gives a little more insight from my point of view, but remember that my point of view is mine alone.

So Bro Adisa acting in illusion was it just a fantasy that he was in control? Or was he really in control of what was going on? I do dig the clip, but I just want to know your take on the effect of illusions vs reality, what makes an illusion real? Or is that a contradiction?

My take on the difference between the illusion of control and control is that the illusion of control relies on something outside of oneself and control is what one does on their own.  When looking at the meaning of the word control, I found the following;

Control:  to check, verify, regulate," from Anglo-Fr. contreroller "exert authority," from M.L. contrarotulus "a counter, register," from L. contra- "against" (see contra) + rotulus, dim. of rota "wheel" (see roll)).

What was in place or what did Cuba's character have to assume he was in control?  What illusions of control exist in day to day existance?
