Found this very interesting:

"Their immature stages are aquatic fresh water forms (called "naiads" or "nymphs"), whose presence indicates a clean, unpolluted environment."

So a diminishing population or complete absence of the genus can indicate environmental contamination.

The experience of "feeling" the area where there is no life is quite the STRANGE moment.
